We are Emma Sargent and Tim Fearon, and we have been coaches for the past twenty years or so – longer for Tim than Emma, but that’s another story!
We had a very successful training and coaching business, working with large corporate clients until 2008. You may well remember what happened then…
Yes, the recession hit and, boy, did it hit us hard. We had all our eggs in one basket. Actually it was two baskets! We had two very big clients who were responsible for 80% of our income.
You can probably see what’s coming…
Well, inside a two-week period they both cancelled all future work and cancelled it the week before cancellation charges kicked in!
Quite frankly we were stuffed. If you’ve ever worked in the corporate market you’ll know that there’s no way on earth that you can replace what was effectively six months solid work inside a week.
If only we’d listened to one of our clients, Geoff, a few years before. He was the Commercial Partner in a large group of solicitors that we were working with.
“You know, guys”, he said one day; “We love you and we love the work you do with us, but your business model’s crap.”
We, of course, protested but he continued. “Anyone whose sole source of income is based on ‘time for money’ is bonkers. It’s a finite model; there’s no opportunity to earn more unless you put your prices up and how often can you do that these days?”
“Besides which, (he was really getting into his stride now) what happens when you’re ill? What happens when you have kids and need the extra money? What happens if the economy bombs (little did we know!)?”
“What happens if you ever decide you don’t want to work any more, or that you want to work less so you can be with your kids, or have a bit more holiday? What happens, as a small business, if you lose one or two of your major clients through no fault of your own?” OUCH! – was Geoff a clairvoyant?
Well, he may not have been a clairvoyant but he was right.
Trouble was it took us until that fateful Wednesday afternoon in April 2008 – it’s funny how you remember certain events so clearly, isn’t it – to recognise it.
Yes, we had become the slaves of the ‘time for money trap’. Certainly, we had been doing well financially – a very healthy six figure income every year – but then suddenly, back in 2008, we had nothing whatsoever to show for it except a rapidly dwindling bank account. Nothing for us when the time came to hang up our boots; nothing for our children; no legacy.
So that was when we made a solemn vow. We decided there and then that this was never going to happen to us again…
So we started our quest to change our business model, traveling to the US many times to learn from the best entrepreneurs in the world…and tentatively taking steps towards a new business. We covered thousands of miles. We invested tens of thousands of pounds. We sought out the best of the best.
And we found what we were looking for.
But, you know how it is when you learn what’s possible? Sometimes it’s hard to take in.
Sometimes, you just don’t believe it will work for you; or you don’t believe that you can do it too.
Or you think that what you have to do is SO different from what you are already doing that you metaphorically throw out the baby with the bath water until you eventually realise that actually you only have to make a small shift.
Have you ever done that? Forgotten that what you’ve learned up to that point still counts?
We don’t mind admitting that we have and we did then.
So we started changing a few things, learning all sorts of skills that meant that we could do all sorts of things, most of which we shouldn’t have been doing ourselves! We made a heap of mistakes. We wasted a LOT of time.
Why on earth did we think it would be a good idea to learn how to do PPC advertising?
Why on earth did we think it would be a good idea to start trying to sell things that we knew nothing about as affiliates on Clickbank?
Why on earth did we think it would be a good idea to start down the property investment route? Actually we did have some success here eventually but that’s a story for another time.
We asked ourselves some searching questions…
Without wishing to appear arrogant, we’re both pretty intelligent people; intelligent people who spent a good deal of time proving how STUPID they are!
Anyway, we eventually got the message and went about repurposing (great strategy by the way, that we now use with our own clients) what we had been offering to corporate clients.
We started a membership for small business owners. It grew and grew and by the second year we were earning more than we had ever earned just doing corporate work, and importantly, we were making more of a difference and reaching more people than ever before too.
And today we continue to learn from the best, traveling to wherever is necessary. You will find us going across the pond several times a year, continually investing in our knowledge base in this fast moving industry.
We now have predictable, leveraged income and are building value in our business. We have multiple streams of income, meaning we have a much more stable business.
We even had a £45,000 day at the end of last year.
And we tell you this piece of information not to brag but to show you what’s possible with different thinking and a shift in your business model.
Even better news is that as a result of our shift in our business, we now work with some of the big players in the industry, both here and in the USA, forming joint ventures, and being asked to speak at events that all contribute to exponential growth in our business.
We could never have predicted then that we would now be doing the same for TV stars and Olympic athletes!
Yes, as an example of our work, we are working with two of the professional dancers from “Strictly Come Dancing” and a well known athlete creating “Expert” information businesses with them so that they can step away from the time for money business model and create a business that is much more sustainable.
It’s all very exciting.
